The staff were very friendly and helpful. The charm of the past fills the hotel completely. The location is perfect, next to everything. Only one problem.. IT IS HAUNTED We arrived in Salem on Nov. 12, 2009. We came from Cape Cod for a night away. After spending a fun filled day at different sights and shops we headed to dinner. We found a gem of a restaurant across the street. After walking dinner off we retired to a lovely room #620 with a nice view. Around 1:15 am I was suddenly awoke by my husband SCREAMING, then he quickly sat up and leaned over onto me still screaming. I held him and calmed him down thinking he was having some terrible nightmare. He said he had no idea why he was screaming, or what he had been dreaming of that may have made him scream. This has never happen to us before. My husband then lay back down to sleep. I was a little annoyed because I don't always sleep well and now I was woke up from a great sleep, which left me with fear in the pit of my stomach. As I started to drift off again my husband started loudly laughing, "What is it, I asked" he said he couldn't help it, something was making him laugh, it was an un controllable feeling of laughter. At last I fell back to sleep, when I woke again I thought it was morning, I thought the sun was in the room. Instead my husband had opened the windows, turned on the lights and the tv he said he did this because he was feeling un easy . Loved the hotel, would love to visit it again not to sure about staying over night. PS: I remember when we first arrived at the room my husband's key card would not open the door. Maybe something did not really want us in there. Otherwise excellent place.

I booked my room online and got a discount rate. While my room was small, it still had all the amenities, was sparkling clean and comfortable. Front desk staff (each shift) was courteous, professional and helpful. I very much like the Lounge with Fireplace too. Location is smack in the center of town, with a huge town Commons Park next door. Everything in this town is within close walking. Town has lots to offer besides Witch Lore. I'd move here, if it wasn't for the cold winters. THen again, who knows....

The Hawthorne Hotel is a 6 story hotel overlooking the Salem witch museum right in the heart of Salem. It also overlooks the common, where you can see weddings all year round and people enjoying the beauty. There are two restaurants in the Hawthorne, a tavern that serves a lighter fare, and a fancy dining room that serves elegant fare. The staff is great, the rooms are clean, and you can find vending machines on every other floor. The lobby is wonderful, decorated to the hilt, comfortable couches and chairs, there are books for the lending to enjoy and take in the breath taking view. This was my second time visiting the Hawthorne and would go back if I ever need to stay in Salem. One more thing that I want to say is there is a great history for the hotel that you will find quite interesting.

This hotel has a very classic look, as it was built in the 1920's. It is located right near the Salem Witch Museum and in a short walk of downtown Salem area. Now I initially had a deluxe room, which was not a deluxe in my opinion. I was told how large and accommodating the room was and it was not. Not to mention I was located next to the elevator and would have had to listen to all persons coming and going. I approached the desk and they upgraded me to a Suite for the night, but the second night I had to pay the full suite rate (minus 10%). They wanted to cancel my bed and breakfast package and refused to let me the keep the complementary breakfast for the second night, as if it really cost them much to allow me to keep the package I was sold. It cost me an extra * for my second night, plus $10 to keep my breakfast voucher. The food and service in the restaurant was really good though. Although, dinner is a little pricey (25-30 a plate) in our opinion. The food and service at the Tavern (the bar inside the hotel) was good and it had a nice atmosphere to it. In my Suite, there is no DVD player, the TVs are small and the remote for the TV in the sitting area did not work. The bed is not very comfortable (as my wife?s back is now sore) and the linins are average Hotel quality (like at the super 8). Over all my stay was okay, I guess, but perhaps I will stay elsewhere if I return.

This is a beautiful old hotel in the middel of Salem, within walking distance of everything. Room was average size but had lots of charm. We did speak to a guest in a single room who said hert room was small. Ours was fine. I would stay again, definitely, can't beat the location.
